Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you ask for an assignment extension?
Ask for an assignment extension as early as possible using the instructor’s designated channel. State the assignment, explain the relevant circumstance briefly, and propose a realistic new deadline.
Explain the need, proposed date, and work completed
Check the syllabus first. A useful message is: “I’m writing about the paper due Thursday. An unexpected work-schedule change has delayed my draft. I have completed the research and outline. Would submission by Saturday be possible under the course policy?” Use circumstances that are true and do not disclose unnecessary private details.
An extension is a request, not an entitlement or proof that penalties disappear. If no approval arrives, do not assume silence means consent. Ask how to proceed, retain written confirmation, and seek longer-term advising when repeated extensions indicate an unsustainable workload.
Your next steps
- Check the late-work and extension policy.
- Make a brief, honest request with a feasible date.
- Confirm the decision and complete the revised plan.
