Picking Battles As A Leader

When Your Words and Your Face Disagree, People Believe Your Face.

Leadership is not just communicated through words. It is revealed through presence. You can deliver the perfect message, say all the right things, and recite the most inspiring vision, but if your facial expression tells a different story, people will trust what they see over what they hear.

The reality is simple: when your words and your face disagree, people believe your face.

The Silent Language of Leadership

Every leader communicates on two levels. The first is verbal. It includes the words spoken in meetings, presentations, coaching conversations, and daily interactions. The second is nonverbal. It includes facial expressions, eye contact, posture, tone, and energy.

People process both, but when the messages conflict, the nonverbal cues usually win.

Imagine a leader who says, "I'm excited about this new direction," while looking tense and concerned. The team walks away sensing uncertainty. Or a leader who says, "I appreciate your work," without making eye contact or showing genuine warmth. The employee remembers the lack of sincerity more than the compliment.

People don't just listen to leaders. They read them.

Why Authenticity Matters

Employees are constantly looking for signs of consistency. They want to know whether they can trust what they are hearing. When words and expressions align, trust grows. When they don't, doubt enters the room.

Authentic leadership is not about performing. It is about ensuring that your message, emotions, and actions are aligned.
