Psycho for Psycho

Dec 18,2015

The movie “Psycho” is not only a classic Alfred Hitchcock movie, it is also one of the most known movies.  Even if someone has not seen the movie, they have definitely heard it.  With the addiction of the television show “Bates Motel”, it’s pretty clear that “Psycho” is here to stay in popular culture.  Little did I know that the famous Hitchcock movie is based on a novel by the same name that was written by Robert Bloch.  As I’m sure that there are others out there that also have not heard of this book, for today’s article, I will explain why I recommend everyone to pick up this books.  There may be spoilers ahead, so read at your own risk!

1.  This book gave me chills.  While this is not the scariest book I have read, it was one of the creepiest.  Normally, books don’t affect me much, but reading this book gave me chills throughout the whole thing.  It also made me want to run and grab my mom and not let her go.  This is definitely a book to read during a stormy night, with only a small illuminating night while you’re home alone.

2.  The events in the book could really happen.  What makes this book really creepy is that it is not implausible.  Everything that happens in this book could actually happen in real life.  This realization gives the book a new level of creepiness that is definitely hard to shake while reading it.  This becomes even more chilling when you think about all of the past serial killers in the past and realize that they could have pulled off something just like this.

3.  The book makes you think.  This book is one that will really stump you throughout the entire thing.  The real thing is though, is that even though you think you know what happens (based on what pop culture has told you) in the movie, while it does play out in the book, it does so in such a way that you will doubt what pop culture has told you.  It really makes you wonder what can drive someone to insanity and to want to cause the destruction that Norman Bates does in this book.

I hope that this article has inspired you to read this book!  While it may take me a while to actually watch the movie, I have to say that Psycho is one of my favorite books!  There are other books in the series, including Psycho II and Psycho House.  I am excited to read the rest of the series in order to fully explore the inner machinations of Norman Bates’ mind.  Please let me know if you have read the book, or if this has inspired you to read the book.  Also, please let me know if you have seen the movie and if I should watch it!  Thanks for reading!
