Why I Chose My Actuarial Science Major and Why I Love It

Mar 26,2016

I chose my major of actuarial science because I want to prevent businesses or people from making financial risks or reduce the damage of those risks. I do this by analyzing data given to me and calculating the probability that an event will occur such as deaths, accidents, natural disasters, etcetera. Then I use calculus, number theory, and finance to come up with a plan that prevents or reduces the financial damage of unwanted events or risks. In the field of actuarial science, actuaries work to increase the profitability of businesses by coming up with financial plans that reduce the chances of risk (money loss) or reduce the financial loss of those risks. Actuaries work mainly in insurance companies or travel as personal consultants.

I also chose this major because I love math and feels it complements my mathematical abilities. The math in this major, I feel, will challenge me more than any other because it uses calculus, probability and statistics, and much more. I also find probability and statistics interesting. I love calculating the probability that an event will occur, analyzing data and statistics, and the idea that I can prevent an unwanted event or risk from occurring by using probability. Probability and statistics is fun and interesting to me. That is why I do not mind calculating it and striving for this actuarial career even though this major is reputed as challenging.

I love my major of actuarial science because it gives me a mathematical challenge that I deserve and seek. I feel that my mathematical talent is not going to waste and being put into good use by preventing businesses and people from financial failures which I feel is a big problem in the world right now. I`m not in it for the money personally even though it pays well but because I care about saving people`s money by preventing or reducing the loss of financial risks. I will accomplish this by using a lot of math such as calculus, number theory, statistics & probability, and economics which I actually enjoy and don`t mind doing because I love it. Therefore I chose actuarial science as my major and future career.
