Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Is dean's list an award?

Dean’s list is generally treated as an academic honor or distinction, and it can belong in an awards or honors section when the application permits it. Use the school’s official terminology and identify the term in which it was earned.

Describe the honor without changing its meaning

The distinction recognizes the performance specified by your school’s policy. It does not automatically mean you received money, ranked first in your class, or earned graduation honors. A list announced by the college is not evidence of a national award.

If a form separates awards from academic honors, follow its instructions. On a résumé, a short entry under Education is often enough. If you earned the distinction in several terms, list those terms or use an accurate count rather than implying continuous recognition.

Put the answer into practice

  • Verify the official name and award notification.
  • Attach the school and relevant term.
  • Avoid unsupported class-rank or selectivity claims.
  • Use the application’s categories as written.

An illustrative entry is “Dean’s List — [college], [verified terms].” The dean’s list résumé guide shows how to keep the wording clear and proportionate.
