Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What is a resident assistant in college?
A resident assistant, often called an RA, is a student staff member who helps build community and carry out residence-life responsibilities. Duties, training, eligibility, and compensation depend on the college.
Understand the responsibility behind the housing role
An RA may organize floor activities, help residents navigate campus services, address routine conflicts, and respond according to housing procedures when problems arise. The role can include evening or weekend duty and required training. An RA is not a substitute for a counselor, medical professional, or emergency responder; the job includes knowing when to contact the appropriate staff.
Before applying, ask about work hours, academic expectations, selection steps, and what the compensation package actually covers. Check with financial aid staff about how the arrangement affects your own aid. Honor Society’s student leadership guide can help you reflect on examples of responsibility, communication, and service. Choose the role because its community responsibilities fit your strengths as well as your housing plans.
Your next steps
