Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What is the president's list in college?
The president’s list is a term-based academic distinction used by some colleges. At institutions that also have a dean’s list, it may recognize a different or higher level of academic performance. The college’s own policy defines the relationship.
Do not infer the threshold from the title
Not every college uses a president’s list, and the name does not establish a universal GPA. Check the required grades, credit load, grading options, and any restrictions on incomplete work. The policy may vary by academic division or enrollment status.
A president’s list designation is separate from a presidential scholarship or a nationally administered recognition program. Similar words do not mean the awards share eligibility, funding, or status.
Put the answer into practice
- Find the exact president’s list policy at your institution.
- Confirm that the relevant term and course load are eligible.
- Save the official notification.
- List the school and term whenever you report the honor.
If both lists appear in your school’s catalog, compare the criteria side by side. The dean’s list versus president’s list guide offers a framework for interpreting the distinction accurately.
