Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How are Latin honors determined?
Colleges determine Latin honors through their published degree policies. GPA is common, but eligibility may also depend on class standing, credits completed at the institution, a thesis or project, or a department’s evaluation.
Build a complete eligibility checklist
Identify the policy for your degree and academic division, then separate the requirements into calculation rules, coursework conditions, and deadlines. Different colleges within one university can use different standards. The relevant catalog year can also matter.
Check how the school handles transfer grades, repeat attempts, pass/fail work, and pending grades. Commencement programs may use an earlier academic snapshot, while final honors depend on the completed record. Purchasing regalia or joining an outside organization does not change the institution’s decision.
Put the answer into practice
- Record the applicable honor levels and criteria.
- Confirm the GPA and credit calculation with the registrar if unclear.
- Track project or thesis deadlines separately from exams.
- Verify the final distinction before using it as an awarded credential.
The commencement and transcript guide is useful when an early ceremony designation differs from the final record. Ask which record is authoritative for your situation.
