Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you ask for a college recommendation letter?
Ask a teacher or other permitted recommender who can describe your learning, character, and contributions with specific examples. Follow the college’s requirements for subject, role, and submission method.
Choose a writer who knows your work
Make the request well before the deadline and give the person a comfortable way to decline. A useful message is: “Would you feel comfortable writing a strong recommendation for my college applications? I valued your feedback on [specific work], and I can send deadlines and a short background sheet.”
Honor Society’s brag-sheet template helps organize accurate examples and goals without scripting the letter. Include relevant work, the application deadline, and the official submission instructions. The recommender should write and submit the recommendation independently; do not impersonate them or edit a confidential letter yourself.
Your next steps
- Check which recommenders each college requires.
- Ask early and provide a concise information packet.
- Track receipt, send a courteous reminder if needed, and thank the writer.
