Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How many letters of recommendation do colleges require?
Colleges set their own recommendation requirements. Some request teacher letters and a counselor report, some accept optional recommendations, and others do not require letters at all.
Follow each college’s required number and recommender roles
Check the current requirements for your applicant category and program. A counselor report and a teacher evaluation may be different components, and an optional additional letter should not replace a required academic recommendation. Specialized programs can have separate rules.
Extra letters help only when they are accepted and add meaningful information. A second account of the same accomplishment may burden the file without improving it. Build a school-by-school checklist showing the required writer type, deadline, invitation status, and receipt status. Ask the college directly when its instructions conflict with what the platform appears to allow.
Your next steps
- List required and optional letters separately.
- Choose writers who can provide distinct, relevant examples.
- Confirm all required letters were assigned to the correct college.
