Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do employers verify education credentials?
Employers may verify education through a school, a credential-verification service, or documents provided by the applicant. The process varies, but it can include checking attendance, degree type, field of study, and completion status.
Make every credential match the record behind it
List an expected graduation date when your degree is unfinished and use the correct degree name. A certificate, short course, and degree are different credentials. If you transferred schools or changed your name, follow the employer’s instructions so the records can be matched accurately. Do not submit sensitive documents through an unverified channel.
A verification discrepancy is not always evidence of dishonesty; outdated records or data-entry errors can occur. If you learn of a mismatch, contact the school and the hiring team promptly with accurate documentation. Never alter a transcript or claim a qualification you have not earned.
Your next steps
- Check your résumé and application against official records.
- Use the employer’s verified process for any documents.
- Resolve discrepancies with the school and hiring team promptly.
